An amateur footballer who chased after an opponent with a hammer has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Gary Tarr went to his car at the end of the match in High Wycombe on April 20 and took out the weapon, Wycombe Magistrates' Court heard on Monday.

The 33-year-old's victim had previously been assaulted by Tarr during the course of the match, causing an injury, the court was told.

Tarr, of Crest Road in Booker, pleaded guilty to assault by beating and using threatening, abusing or insulting words or behaviour to cause fear of unlawful violence.

Magistrates suspended the 18 week prison sentence they gave him for 12 months and ordered him to carry out 200 hours of unpaid work.

Tarr must also pay £200 in compensation to his victim, £165 in costs and a criminal courts charge of £150.

Magistrates said the offence was aggravated by the fact spectators and young people were present at the match. His victim was under the age of 18, the court was told.
