An ex-Lewisham councillor who was with pal Stephen Lawrence when the teen was killed in a racist Eltham attack has been honoured by the queen with an OBE.

Duwayne Brooks was a Lib Dem representative for Downham ward and ran for Mayor of Lewisham last year promising to crack down on crime before his party was wiped out in the polls.

Mr Brooks, now considering a tilt at the London Mayoral contest, was with Stephen in 1993 when the pair were attacked by racist thugs and gave emotional testimony at the killers' long-awaited trial in 2011.

The politician was awarded the gong in the queen's birthday honours last week for public and political services.

He said: "I am both delighted and humbled to be given this award by Her Majesty for my public and political services.

"I have tried to return the support I received from local people by serving as a councillor in a deprived ward in Lewisham and undertaking other public work. This includes leading for the Liberal Democrats on the Safer and Stronger Communities Board at the Local Government Association.

"I want to do more to represent all Londoners of whatever background, and not just black and ethnic minorities. This honour has given my aim a massive boost."

Elsewhere, there was an CBE for Lewisham Council's outgoing director for children and young people's services Frankie Sulke, who announced she was standing down in March after 14 years in her post.

Ms Sulke said: "I am very honoured to have received this recognition. It has been such a privilege to work for children and young people over the last 35 years.

"During that time, and particularly in Lewisham over the last 14 years, it has been a real joy to share a relentless ambition to improve the life chances and choices of those children and young people with so many dedicated and highly skilled professionals.

"They work, day in and day out, to make the difference, particularly for our most vulnerable and disadvantaged children and families.  This recognition is, of course, as much for them as it is for me."

And, in Greenwich, Robert Love has been honoured with an MBE for his work as a local authority governor for Morden Mount and other schools.
