Bluewater shopping centre is the fourth biggest crime hotspot in England and Wales, according to statisitics.

The Mirror newspaper analysed crime statistics released by the Home Office for the month of April to reveal the 50 worst postcodes for crime.

Shopping areas were generally the most blighted and Bluewater was no exception, with 79 crimes committed - one every nine hours.

Inspector Gary Woodward, of the Dartford community safety unit, said: "Bluewater, which has exceptionally high visitor numbers, has a dedicated Kent Police station and specialist officers on patrol.

"We work closely with the stores to ensure they have security measures in place and monitor CCTV throughout the centre.

"However, with a yearly footfall of more than 28 million, there will always be those who try to ruin the enjoyment of others.

"In April this year, there were 75 crimes recorded in Bluewater shopping centre. Of these, more than 80 per cent were shoplifting and theft offences.

"While we appreciate any crime can be distressing, these figures should reassure residents that Bluewater remains an extremely safe place to visit."

A Bluewater spokesperson added: "As a proportion of our guest numbers visiting Bluewater, the incident levels remain very low.

"We are proud to work closely with Kent Police to ensure Bluewater is an enjoyable place for our guests to visit."

According to the study, almost 2,500 crimes were committed in the 50 postcode areas which included shopping centres, airports and residential streets.

Crimes are assigned to the nearest location possible by police for inclusion in the crime statistics, which can mean some crimes from small side streets are assigned to nearby, larger streets.
