With tunnelling work complete, we look at the numbers behind the massive cross-London rail project Crossrail.

£202 million – That’s how much the £14.8 billion, 73-mile scheme is costing per mile.

£127m – This is the per-mile rate for the 335-mile long, £50bn HS2 high-speed scheme, if both its phases are completed, including the £7.5bn cost of the trains.

£85m – How much the £5.8bn, 68-mile long HS1 high-speed rail link was per mile when completed in 2007. Relatively cheap compared to ...

£302m – What the 31.4-mile Channel Tunnel completed in 1994 took per mile to build, with an overall cost of £9.5bn.

This Is Local London: How the Crossrail trains will look

May 15, 2009 – The start of Crossrail construction at Canary Wharf, while tunnelling work started in May 2012.

2019 – The year Crossrail will be fully open, running from Reading in Berkshire in the west to Shenfield in Essex in the east, with spurs to Heathrow Airport and Abbey Wood in south London.

This Is Local London:

1,500 – The number of ship journeys that have delivered three million tonnes of excavated material from Crossrail's tunnels and stations that is being used to create an RSPB nature reserve at Wallasea Island in Essex.

3,000 –The rough number of skeletons from the Bedlam burial ground at Liverpool Street that a team of 60 archaeologists began excavating in March this year.

8 – How many boring machines that have been used to dig the tunnels under central London. The last two were Elizabeth and Victoria which each weighed 1,000 tonnes, were more than 450ft long and more than 20ft in diameter.

This Is Local London:

10 – A raft of new Crossrail stations are being built through central London and Docklands at Paddington, Bond Street, Tottenham Court Road, Farringdon, Liverpool Street, Whitechapel, Canary Wharf, Custom House, Woolwich and Abbey Wood.

10% - How much Crossrail will boost London's rail capacity by, with new stations able to accommodate trains up to 200 metres long.

24 – There will be up to this many trains per hour between Paddington and Whitechapel during peak time.
