A fire started outside a gym in Battersea before spreading to a wall cavity has been brought under control.

This Is Local London:

London Fire Brigade (LFB) sent four fire engines and 20 firefighters to Fitness First in Falcon Road, above Revolution bar, at 12.23pm and crews were still at the scene two hours later.

An LFB spokesman said they were initially called to reports of a fire in the changing rooms at the gym, but said it now appears the fire started in an outside area next to the gym.

Borough commander Darren Munro said: "When crews arrived they discovered the fire had actually started in an outside area next to a restaurant below the gym and had then spread to a wall cavity attached to the restaurant.

"Smoke from the fire was affecting the gym so around 60 people were evacuated as a precaution.

"Our crews worked quickly to get the fire under control and stop it from spreading but will remain at the scene damping down remaining hot-spots for some time."

Arc Lugaziah said he saw fire engines and "water everywhere" when he passed the area at 2.20pm.

He added: "They have cordoned off the road and closed off the whole area."

Ilaria Magagnotti, who works at the Slug and Lettuce opposite Revolution, said she was alerted to the fire when a customer told her about it.

She added: “I just came out and you couldn’t see any big fire. Here we are fine, we didn’t even hear the alarm.”

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
