From elevated walkways to public squares to swimming in the Thames, these are the 10 most exciting projects set to transform London’s great outdoors.

These upcoming places and spaces have been selected by think-tank organisation New London Architecture (NLA) as the most thought-provoking and forward-thinking examples of al fresco living that Londoners will be able to enjoy.

NLA chairman Peter Murray said: “As London grows we are seeing the development of areas of increased density, so it is vital that we have high quality open space where people can relax, meet and exercise.

“The 10 new spaces provide an example of the sorts of places that will enhance new and existing parts of the capital.”

Here are those 10 exciting projects, with accompanying notes provided by the NLA.

London Wall Place – 121-123 London Wall, City of London, EC2 (Due for completion summer 2017)

This Is Local London:

Providing an opportunity for a new public realm environment in this hitherto overlooked part of the City of London, London Wall Place seeks to create a garden retreat, radically overhauling this area and returning it to a people-focussed public realm.

Completing a wider route from Finsbury Square to Bankside, the scheme will create a north-south path which connects the Barbican to the Guildhall, while the east-west path links London Wall with St Alphage Gardens.

Thames Baths Project - Victoria Embankment, City of London, EC4 (Due for completion 2017)

This Is Local London:

Thames Baths Project is a self-initiated campaign for the re-introduction of swimming in the River Thames. The project looks to re-establish an intimate and playful link between Londoners and this historic lifeblood of the city.

The objective is to provide naturally filtered river water pools and recreation space alongside the Victoria Embankment.

Pop Brixton – Brixton Station Road, Lambeth, SW9 (Due for completion May 2015)

This Is Local London:

A new community campus for start-ups and small businesses, Pop Brixton will provide a new public space in the heart of Brixton creating flexible studio, retail, office and workshop spaces for the community.

Created from low-cost, low-energy shipping containers, the refreshing design has a focus on sustainability and efficiency.

Pop Brixton will also include an event space, hosting live acts, film screenings and performance art.

Centre Point Public Square/St Giles Circus - Camden (Due for completion 2017)

This Is Local London:

The arrival of Crossrail to Tottenham Court Road has acted as a catalyst, and extensive redevelopment of Centre Point has allowed the public realm to be dramatically enhanced and extended.

A large new south-facing public square will be created in the centre of the complex, between the tower, link building and house.

Walthamstow Wetlands – Ferry Lane, Waltham Forest, N17 (Due for completion spring 2017)

This Is Local London:

Previously inaccessible, Thames Water’s operational drinking water reservoirs will be opened to the public, creating the largest urban wetland nature reserve in London.

The project will provide four new entrances, an improved network of pathways, a visitor centre and café in the Victorian pump station Marine Engine House, and a viewing point and outdoor classroom in the historic Coppermill Tower, as well as enhancements to natural habitats.

The Goodsyard – Bishopsgate Goods Yard, Shoreditch, Hackney and Tower Hamlets, E1

This Is Local London:

Originally established as a passenger station in 1840, the site has remained derelict since it was destroyed by fire in 1964.

The redevelopment of the site will introduce 5.45 acres of park and public realm, with a design that draws on the historic fabric of the site.

Elephant Square – Elephant and Castle Public Space Project – Elephant and Castle, Southwark, SE1 (Phase 1 due for completion 2016)

This Is Local London:

In spring 2015, the highway at the northern roundabout of the Elephant and Castle will begin to undergo changes, including the removal of the roundabout by closing the southern side and converting the traffic to two-way operation.

The subways will be replaced with pedestrian crossings and a number of new cycle lanes – as part of the Mayor’s Cycling Vision – will be introduced around the junction to improve cycle safety.

High Road West Masterplan, Tottenham, Haringey, N17

This Is Local London:

The 2011 riots brought Tottenham into the headlines, resulting in investment from the Mayor of London for rebuilding damaged properties and in long-term regeneration plans for the area.

Public open space in High Road West will be doubled with a significant increase in the quality of public and private spaces. Two new public spaces will be delivered alongside secure shared courtyards and private gardens.

West End Square – Camden, (Completion due 2018)

This Is Local London:

Camden’s West End project, responding to expected massive increase in visitors with the arrival of Crossrail, will transform one-way, congested streets into two-way-tree lined streets, with protected cycle lanes and new public spaces.

The various proposal covers a series of locations across the Camden area including transforming the Tottenham Court Road and Gower Street area.

Earls Court Masterplan – Hammersmith and Fulham and Kensington and Chelsea (Due for completion 2030)

This Is Local London:

Covering 77 acres on the western edge of central London, the Earls Court Project Area offers a rare opportunity to provide around 7,500 much-needed new homes and 10,000 new jobs for Londoners, based on the concept of ‘four villages and a high street’ which takes London’s unique fabric as its inspiration.

The NLA’s latest exhibition, Public London: 10 Years of Transforming Spaces, runs until July 11 and includes its own public space installation, Never Mind the Bollards.

This installation demonstrates how small spaces within our city can be transformed into vibrant areas of public activity.
