Road users in Sidcup have expressed their anger as traffic in the area became repeatedly gridlocked last week.

The cause of the congestion was a leaking gas main in Sidcup Hill, which resulted in temporary traffic lights being put in place.

Victor Thornton, of Halfway Street, Sidcup, said the problem has become far too common, with a similar situation occuring in early April due to road repairs near Sidcup Station.

The 65-year-old, who has lived in Sidcup for 40 years, said he was frustrated at the apparent lack of proper procedure, for which he blamed Bexley Council.

He said: "There should be a procedure in place - whether it's a nuclear blast or a 9/11 type situation or just roadworks.

"When you get on the council you just seem to get a parrot answer, all they say is there is nothing they can do about it.

"You cannot seem to get through to them."

Throughout last week people took to Twitter in anger at the situation.

A spokeswoman for Bexley Council said: "These works are the result of a leaking gas main.

"The unavoidable repairs are being carried out by gas company SGN but the position of the leak meant that complicated traffic management had to be put in place using temporary lights."
