The count for 20 borough seats, one county by-election (Weybridge) and Claygate Parish councillors takes place from 1pm today at Sandown Park, Esher.

Last night’s result saw Dominic Raab re-elected as MP for the Esher and Walton constituency with a majority of more than 28,000.

Nicholas Wood, for UKIP, who lost out to Mr Raab for the seat in parliament is hoping to get a seat in the Walton Ambleside ward.

Similarly with Olivia Palmer, for the Green Party, who is today standing in the Hersham South ward.

Nervous: But good reactions doorstep reactions greeted Councillor Chris Sadler

Councillor Chris Sadler, for the Walton Society, and hoping to retain his Walton Central seat, said: “I think it’s the stage where you get butterflies now. It looks as if there was a good turnout.

“But you never know what they are going to come out as. I have to say some of the reactions that I’ve had when I’ve been going around door to door have been lovely.

“We shall see.”

Despite the late night for Dominic Raab, newly re-elected MP for Esher and Walton, he looks cheerful - buoyed by his victory.

He said: “For me, a mixture of huge relief and humility that we have managed to secure a majority government albeit a slim one. Which gives us the opportunity to govern responsibly, to keep our promises and to ensure some stability for Britain at such a critical time.”

This election saw councillors elected for 20 of the 60 available seats, after 20 were elected last year, with the final 20 to be decided in 2016, if the current system remains.

Ramon Gray, after winning the by-election for Surrey County Council's Weybridge seat, stressed the importance of canvassing and showing voters who you are and what you plan to do. He said he is happy but exhausted after doing more than 20 days of consecutive canvassing.

However, this could change if the Boundary Commission for England grants the proposed change in boundaries, and therefore the reduction in councillor numbers.

Councillor Mary Sheldon, for Hersham South, commenting on the resignation of Nick Clegg, Ed Miliband and Nigel Farage, said: “I think it’s very unusual to have an election result, for the other leaders, a large number of the other leaders, to resign.”

At it again: UKIP candidate Joe Branco was up against Philip Hammond last night

Joe Branco, for UKIP, who went up against Philip Hammond last night and missed out on parliamentary election, is running for the Weybridge county council seat in the by-election.

He said: “I put my hat in because there was nobody standing. Rather than having no person at all for UKIP I decided to do it.

“I’m looking forward to seeing the results, having not stood before and having not really sufficient time. But I think we have worked hard, knocked on many doors, I’ve certainly lost weight.”

Speaking of his defeat in last night’s results: “I didn’t expect to get as many [votes]. We have more than doubled our count from previous.

“I was very, very pleased. [I] only entered two months ago and was very happy with the result.”

We will be updating the results below as they come in:
