Selfie sticks are all the rage, but anyone hoping to take the perfect self portrait snap at this year’s Wimbledon tennis championships will be disappointed as the venue has banned them.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) is the latest high profile venue to ban the sticks, which enable people to take flattering photos of themselves, and have been used by celebrities across the globe.

A spokesman for the AELTC told the Evening Standard the move was brought in partly because of the "nuisance value" but "primarily so it doesn't interfere with spectators' enjoyment".

Last year the quintessentially English pastime of drinking tea was made all the more difficult, as Thermos flasks were banned, and still are, amid security fears.

Selfie sticks are now listed as officially prohibited items on the Wimbledon.com website, which states visitors in possession of banned items may be refused entry or ejected from the grounds.

Current Wimbledon men’s singles champion Novak Djokovic has joined the selfie craze, tweeting a photo of himself with some of the sport’s biggest stars.

Selfie sticks have been popular amongst photo fans and the craze has swept across the world. Boris Johnson, Beyonce and even Barack Obama have used the sticks to take photos of themselves recently.

Earlier this year they were banned from the National Gallery and Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.

The championships will be held from Monday, June 29 to Sunday, July 12 this year.
