Work that would have led to an entrance to Finsbury Park Tube station being closed for more than two years has been postponed.

Transport for London (TfL) was due to close the Wells Terrace entrance from today as part of improvement work at the station.

Now, to the relief of station users who criticised plans to close the entrance until 2017, TfL has announced the work has been put back.

London Underground's major programme sponsorship director David Hughes said: "Our upgrade of Finsbury Park Tube station is being co-ordinated with a project by City North Ltd which is adjacent to the station.

"City North has informed us that they are now not in a position to proceed with their work at this time.

"This temporarily impacts on our planned work at the Wells Terrace station entrance and means that this station entrance will remain open until further notice to minimise disruption to our customers.

“We remain absolutely committed to delivering improvements, including step-free access, at Finsbury Park Underground station."

Finsbury Park is the fourth busiest Underground station outside London's zone 1 ticket area.

The number of people using the station during the week has increased by 20 per cent since 2010.
