A third member of the same family has been jailed for defrauding elderly people.

Jesse Webb, 19, of Virginia Water, Surrey, was sentenced to 12 months in prison at St Albans Crown Court today for a series of cons across the home counties.

Webb, his brother Jimmy Chuter, 26, of Datchet, Berkshire, and his father Albert Webb, 51, of Virginia Water, Surrey, would approach elderly people claiming they had completed roofing work on their properties and demand payment for the work.

The majority of victims were women aged in their 80s and 90s. The oldest victim was a 97-year-old man.

One victim, an 87-year-old woman, was approached by Albert Webb in Darkes Lane, Potters Bar on September 24, 2013 while she was shopping.

The victim ignored him, and returned home a couple of hours later to find him waiting outside her home with a younger man.

They spoke to her about building work, and claimed they had completed work and required payment, demanding £2,000.

The men took her into the garden and showed her the work they claimed to have carried out.

Although she did not believe the work had been done, she felt the only way to make them was to pay them. She gave them the money, and they left.

In total, it is believed they gained £15,000 from their crimes.

In January, Jimmy Chuter was sentenced to four years in prison and Albert Webb to three and a half years.

After their sentencing, a wanted appeal was issued for Jesse Webb, who was later arrested.

Detective Constable Kieran Doyle said: “These really were shameful crimes and it’s beyond belief that they could stoop so low to pick out their victims and follow them home, and then make them believe they had carried out repairs to their house and harass them for money.

“We will leave no stone unturned to identify these criminals and ensure they are taken off the streets so we can protect some of the most vulnerable in our community. I hope this sends a warning to others that no matter where you commit your crime, we will uncover the full extent of your criminality and track you down.”
