Colin Hall, the deputy leader of Sutton Council, has died.

Described as a “wonderful colleague” and “great friend” who was “totally committed to Sutton”, he succumbed to cancer on Monday morning. He was 54.

Tributes to Liberal Democrat Mr Hall, who had served as ward councillor for Wallington South since 1998, have come in following his death.

The borough flag has been flying at half mast at the Civic Centre as a mark of respect.

Tom Brake, who Mr Hall had worked for as a constituency organiser, said: “I knew Colin for at least 15 years and, in that time, it was very clear that he was totally committed to Sutton and he had a particular commitment and interest in environmental issues.

“His passing will be a great loss to Sutton and my thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time.

“He was at one point my constituency organiser. We worked very closely together on campaigns. He was a fantastic campaigner. He will be missed.”

Mr Hall was born in 1961. He died at 4am on Monday, March 30.

He recently married his partner Suzanna while in hospital.

He is survived by three children, Tom, Emma and David.

Councillor Ruth Dombey, leader of Sutton Council, said: “He was passionate about the borough and a dedicated councillor.

“He cared passionately about the environment, making Sutton a more sustainable place to live.

“What has struck me is how many people have contacted me to say how highly he was respected. He was a wonderful colleague and a good friend. He will be greatly missed.

“Colin was elected as deputy leader of Sutton Council by the Liberal Democrat group in 2012 because he was so highly respected.”

Councillor Tim Crowley, leader of the opposition Conservative group, said: “Above all, he was an excellent colleague and a good guy. We will miss him greatly.”
