Isleworth station has finally cleaned up its act - after a two-year trash battle between a residents' association and South West Trains.

Thirty bags full of litter were removed from the area around the station after the St John's Residents' Association threatened to take SWT to court over their failure to keep the area clean.

The association had battled with train bosses for years to get piles of tin cans, bottles and wrappers removed from the station's embankments.

Association spokesman Dominic West, who organised the action, said: "It took two years to get there but clearly the company has now taken its litter duty seriously and it shows that our action has had the desired effect."

Mr West called for steps to be taken to ensure that litter is not allowed to build up on the site again.

A spokesperson for SWT said: "There was a threat to go to court under the Environmental Protection Act."

But he added: "There was a problem getting down to some of the rubbish because it was next to the tracks. South West Trains is now in talks with Network Rail to reduce rubbish and increase the ease with which rubbish can be cleaned up in future."
