Members of Patient Public Involvement Forum for West London Mental Health were among the first to back a new awareness campaign.

The Write Now campaign aims to challenge the stigmatisation of mental health and people with mental illness in the national and local media.

Organisers hope to stop all journalists from using misleading and inflammatory terms, such as mental, nutter, mad or schizophrenic, when describing those suffering from mental illness. They feel that such labels cause fear and embarrassment, and can lead to public misunderstanding and exclusion.

Andrew Barton, chair of the PPI Forum, said he was pleased to be part of the campaign and hoped others would follow his example.
