A fundraising campaign has been set up to help a disabled pensioner whose mobility scooter was swallowed up when a sinkhole appeared in her back garden.

The hole appeared next to the houses of 65-year-old Carole Kent and elderly neighbours Joseph Hutchens, 78, and wife Barbara, 75, in Oliver Road, Swanley, in the early hours of last Thursday (March 19).

Both their sheds disappeared into the void while it also caused a number of additional problems, including the leaking of raw sewage after a manhole was damaged.

Despite seeking help from Sevenoaks District Council, Thames Water and the Environment Agency, the vulnerable residents have struggled to get the assistance they need to resolve the problem.

Sevenoaks District Council's Building Control Team has carried out a risk assessment, deeming the hole does not pose an immediate danger to life.

The council has also provided Mrs Kent with alternative accommodation, while Mr and Mrs Hutchens have found their own.

However, as the land is privately owned, the council is not responsible for repairing the hole.
