A Sidcup man is suspected of being involved in a racist incident in which Chelsea football fans prevented a black man from boarding a Paris Metro train.

The Met Police are applying for football banning orders to be imposed on five Chelsea supporters who they believe were involved when fans sang racist chants and refused to let the man on the train ahead of the club's match against Paris St Germain last month.

Several were filmed chanting: "We're racist, we're racist and that's the way we like it."

One of the accused, Jordan Munday, 20, of Ellenborough Road, Sidcup, attended Waltham Forest Magistrates’ Court for a preliminary hearing today (March 25) along with the other four.

Prosecutor Ian Rees Phillips told the court - which was packed with legal representatives and reporters from the UK and France - the five men opposed the implementation of the banning orders.

District Judge Mary Connolly said the orders would involve severe restrictions to civil liberties.

A full hearing expected to last two days will take place at Waltham Forest Magistrates' Court on July 15 and 16.

The French commuter kept off the train, Souleymane Sylla, has said the incident "destroyed" him and left him unable to work or travel on public transport.

He said his children had been left "traumatised" by reports of what happened and that he had become depressed.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said the club was "appalled" by the racial abuse, adding that owner Roman Abramovich was also "disgusted".

An investigation revealed earlier this week that Chelsea supporters have been involved in the highest number of reported racist incidents as they travelled to and from matches on trains.

The British Transport Police said since 2012 it had dealt with 15 incidents of alleged racism involving Chelsea fans, the most of any club in the country.
