A police investigation has been launched after the sudden death of a man in Hersham.

Emergency services were called to Assher Road at about 10am yesterday to reports of a sudden death.

A Surrey Police spokesman said: "The body of a man, believed to be in his early 50s, was discovered at the scene, where he was pronounced dead.

"Officers are carrying out a thorough investigation in the circumstances surrounding the death but at this stage there is no indication of any third party involvement or wider risk to the local community.

"A post mortem examination will take place in due course."

An employee of the Upper Cut Hair Shop, at the entrance to Assher Road said the road was pretty much closed off and she saw "lots and lots of emergency services" following the discovery of the body at about 10am.

She said she thought the man’s mother, in her 70s, found her son, who was believed to be 51 years old, in the van.

Most of the emergency services had gone by the afternoon but there were still three or four police cars, the employee said, until an ambulance came to collect the body at about 2pm yesterday.

The van was taken away this afternoon.

She said the man's mother had been amazing in dealing with the situation, although was clearly very upset.

She said: "It's really quite something, very sad for the lady."

Residents posted about a large police presence in the area on Facebook, with reports the man was found in a vehicle.
