UPDATED: Cigarette may have caused fire on tracks near level crossing at Strawberry Hill station

The fire occurred on a wooden 'cattle grid' structure, used to keep people from entering the tracks from the road, next to the platforms.

Both Twickenham fire station engines attended the scene at 9.10am as well as the rail incident officer.

Ian Devine, temporary watch manager at Twickenham fire station, said: "It looks as though someone discarded a cigarette.

"Because two live rails stop where the cattle grid starts and we couldn't gain access to extinguish the fire until the power was turned off."

He added the fire was put out shortly after the power was switched off.

One commuter, who asked not to be named, said: "The fire was coming from right under the tracks - some people said it must be some diesel that has leaked.

"It wasn’t a major fire but it was quite a wide area and a lot of smoke and flames."

Minor delays were caused at all stations between Twickenham and Kingston.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the line while no trains were able to pass through the station.

A Network Rail spokesman confirmed it was investigating the cause of the fire.
