A London Assembly Member rolled up her sleeves to serve hot meals to the hungry last night as she became a patron for Walthamstow’s Christian Kitchen.

As more people than ever seek free hot meals, Jennette Arnold, Labour London Assembly Member for North East London, has joined the team helping the homeless and those in need.

Founder and Life Patron Maureen Rhodes set up Christian Kitchen, which serves meals in the car park in Mission Grove, Walthamstow 365 days per year, over 25 years ago.

Last year, the charity fought off an eviction bid from Waltham Forest council in the High Court.

The council said anti-social behaviour was the reason for offering an alternative location near the Crooked Billet roundabout.

But this was successfully challenged.

Chairman of Trustees Norman Coe said the charity was delighted with the support from Mrs Arnold.

He said: “When the council wanted to move us she spoke out for us, she supported us and wanted to help us.

“Because of that we decided to write to her and ask if she would like to become a patron.

“She has a high profile and she can help highlight the situation for homeless people.

“We have about 60 people per night coming at the moment and we are open 365 days a year.”

Mrs Arnold said: “I was so humbled to have been asked.

“Volunteers here give up their time and their hearts and are saying to people who find themselves in a desperate situation – ‘we are with you’.

“I have been with them since I heard about their struggle – this is such an amazing charity. Feeding someone when they are hungry is about the kindest thing you can do for someone. I think we all could do with being a little more Christian.”
