Two young Rottweiler’s suffered "unrelenting pain" after having their tails docked by a restaurant owner.

Ediz Hastulc, director of Cyprus Garden restaurant in Southend Road, Chingford, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to two puppies during the first day of his trial at Walthamstow Magistrates Court yesterday.

The 42 year-old injured three month old Rocky and Roxanne through an illegal practice known as 'docking' whereby he tied an elastic band around their tails between April 5 and 10 of last year.

The RSPCA and police were called to the meze bar and restaurant in April and found Rocky with injuries to his stunted, docked tail and Roxanne's 'dead tail' which later fell off.

Both puppies were seized by police and taken into care where they have since recovered from their injuries and will hopefully be given a new home.

RSPCA inspector, Emily Collins said: "We are very pleased the defendant has pleaded guilty and admitted causing suffering to these poor puppies.

"Rocky and Roxanne were clearly suffering, with injured and infected tails.

"They had just been left to suffer in unrelenting pain and had not been taken to a vet.

"It would have been awful for them, but thankfully they have both made a full recovery and hopefully face a much brighter future now that we can find them a permanent home."

Hastulc could face up to six months in jail and a fine of £20,000.

Docking, or tailing, was outlawed in 2007 under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 but is permitted by a veterinary surgeon for medical treatment, to save a dog's life and for working dogs used in connection with law enforcement, pest control and lawful animal shooting.

He is due to be sentenced at Walthamstow Magistrates Court on March 24.
