A choir proved their voices have not tired with age when they were crowned the winners of a singing competition.

The Rubenettes Choir, from Rubens House, in Ballards Lane, Finchley, beat off strong competition in the Jewish Care Sing-Off 2015 last week.

The choir is made up of three residents who have the average age of 89, as well as staff members, who gave a performance of “What a Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong.

As well as being crowned the overall winners, they also won the title of being the ‘most smiley choir’.

The day was held at a Jewish Care centre in Redbridge.

Rubenettes singer, Sadie Simmons, 86 who accepted the award from chief executive, Simon Morris, said:“I just want you to know – we really deserved this. I enjoyed the day and winning the competition very much. It was wonderful for the home.”

The oldest member of The Rubenettes, resident Kitty Hammond, 94, said “Everything about the day was wonderful and winning the competition really boosted my morale.

“I’ve always loved music and musicals very much.”

Tina Lewis, 88, who also lives in the home, said: “It was a long journey but it was worth it when we won the competition.”
