One last attempt will be made to place a pedestrian crossing in Rydens Road.

Surrey County Council wants a crossing point on the Walton road, but previous attempts have failed due to adjoining roads and high vehicle numbers.

Now it wants to close the entrance of Meadowside, to achieve a safe crossing point.

Councillor Christine Elmer said: "Surrey County Council highways have advised us that if this does not go ahead there will be not further attempt by them to look at a crossing point, as there is simply nowhere else on the road that is suitable in the 'desire line' to cross Rydens Road."

A county council spokesman said: "Rydens Road can be challenging to cross during peak times so we are looking at providing an island in the middle of the road to ensure safety for pedestrians.

"We are ensuring that we consult on this with residents at a very early stage before we commit any significant funding to developing this proposal, this includes the possible closure of the entrance to Meadowside from Rydens Road."

Mick Flannigan, of Rydens Road, said: "Having lived in Rydens Road for over 20 years, I am not aware of any accidents involving pedestrians being knocked over while trying to cross this road. People are aware of the hazards presented by lots of traffic and they take due care."
