A fly tipper from Tottenham has been slapped with a fine and a criminal record.

Ahmet Karagez of Rothbury Road, Northumberland Park, was forced to pay out more than £500 after he was caught fly tipping.

Staff from Haringey Borough council's waste contractor Veolia saw Mr Karagez unloading used vehicle parts and sacks of rubbish from his van in Carbunkle Passage, Tottenham in November 2013.

The eagle eyed dustmen made a note of his vehicle registration and passed it onto the council who were able to track down Mr Karagez with the help of the Met Police.

During an interview, he admitted that he had collected scrap metal from households in Tottenham and dumped the items he could not sell.

On January 14 he admitted flytipping at Tottenham Magistrates Court, was fined £250 and ordered to pay £250 costs as well as a £25 victim surcharge.

Carbunkle Passage is a notorious fly tipping hotspot and an area of focus for Operation Clean Street’s, the council’s drive to keep Haringey tidy and punish people who dump waste.

Cabinet member for environment councillor Stuart McNamara said: “Fly-tipping is an unacceptable blight on our streets and we are taking action to stamp it out, including working tirelessly to engage with residents and piloting new projects such as timed collections and the fly-tipping hotspots programme.

"Where necessary we will not hesitate to bring cases to court to ensure those responsible face justice.

“We also want people to tell us when they see dumped rubbish, or see fly-tipping in action, so that together we can ensure our streets are kept clean.”
