The man shot dead in Thamesmead yesterday morning (February 1) has been named as Clive Massi.

Nine men and two women were arrested after Mr Massi, an engineering student at the College of North West London, died from gunshot wounds.

Police had been called to Erebus Drive to reports of shots fired at 4.30am.

At the time, residents of Erebus Drive and nearby Prier Way heard gun shots and a "commotion" in the street.

One resident, who has lived on Pier Road for six months and asked not to be named, said: "There was a commotion over the road - there were some males and some females standing in the road.

"I just head gun shots from my flat and I called the police.

"It was the first time I'd ever heard a gun shot, it was frightening.

"It's a really nice area."

Two women, aged 24 and 26, three 19-year-old men and a 25-year-old man have been bailed to a date in mid March.

The five other men, aged from 22 to 25, have been released with no further action.

While on their way to the incident, police officers came across two cars - a dark blue Ford Focus and a grey Audi A3 - with three men inside on Western Way.

Mr Massi was inside the Ford and was suffering from gunshot wounds.

The London Ambulance Service attended and took him to a London hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6.30am.

Chris Hawkswell, London Ambulance Service tactical advisor, tweeted: “An ambulance crew, fast response medic, duty officer and the London Air Ambulance attended a shooting in Thamesmead in the early hours.

“Sadly the man died.”

The two other men in the cars were not arrested.

Neighbour, Elizabeth Costa, 36, lives in a nearby tower block on Cumberland Way with her husband and children.

Mrs Costa said: "I didn't know anything until I came down the next day and there were police everywhere, I was shocked.

"I didn't hear any police or anything.

"It's scary as well, I have children and I sometimes leave my 14-year-old playing on the computer but now, no.

"It's normally a very quite, family area. I'm shocked."

A friend of Mr Massi, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: "Clive Massi was a wonderful, caring man who adored his family and was incredibly loyal to his friends.

"His smile would light up the room and he had a laugh that would make you forget all your problems.

"I cannot believe he has been taken away."

A number of messages paying tribute to Mr Massi have been posted on Twitter.

A spokesman for the College of North West London said: "We would like to say we are shocked and saddened to hear of this tragic incident and pass on our condolences to Clive’s friends and family."

Roads were closed yesterday as forensic officers scoured the scene of the shooting and Western Way, near Belmarsh, for evidence.

Next of kin have been informed.

A post mortem examination and formal identification will take place in due course.
