Ocado has announced it is planning to open a £98.8m distribution centre in Erith.

The grocery delivery company posted a statement on its website yesterday (January 29) confirming it has agreed to a development in Bronze Age Way.

Although planning consent has not yet been granted, Ocado expects the fit out work will begin next year and it will open by 2017.

The investment price is £98.8 million for the 35 acre site but an Ocado spokesman would not confirm how many jobs the development would bring.

Ocado will give further details when it reports its full year results on February 3.

The property will be built by Bericote Properties and funded by Tritax Big Box.

Joe Clark tweeted from his ‏@joertmclark account:  “Great news to hear Ocado is planning on a new distribution centre at Erith, Bexley.

“More jobs for local people.”

The news comes days after News Shopper revealed Tesco was closing its branch in Picardy Street, Belvedere.

On Wednesday (Jan 27) it was announced the Express outlet will close on March 17.
