Violent crime rose dramatically in a year, with overall crime in Elmbridge up by 8.8 per cent.

Burglary, vehicle crime, criminal damage and antisocial behaviour figures fell by 229 incidents but violent crime was up significantly, Figures supplied by Surrey Police for April 2014 to December 2014, compared with the same period in 2013, were issued by Elmbridge Community Safety Partnership.

Councillor Christine Cross, portfolio holder for community development, said: "I am really pleased to see the continuing fall in crimes such as domestic and non-domestic burglary, vehicle crime, criminal damage and antisocial behaviour over the nine months of this financial year, however it's disappointing that all this good news is overshadowed by the rise in violent crime which has left us with an increase in crime of 337 incidents compared to the same period last year.

"The rise in violence seems to be a national trend everyone is focusing on to try to stem the problem but it has not proved an easy task and must remain as one of our main priorities for next year."
