An 18-year-old teenager is urging politicians to tackle poverty and climate change.

Khalid Ahmad, who lives in West Harrow, recently met Labour Party leader Ed Miliband at an international development event at Queens Park Community School, in Brent.

Khalid, who is a youth ambassador for the ONE Campaign for a second consecutive year, will spend the next year lobbying with MPs and decision makers with 250 other ambassadors.

He said: “It was really good fun – a great experience and really interesting. The event was quite surreal. We just went through, had a quick meet and greet and lots of pictures but that was it one on one – the meeting was very brief but the actual event was very interesting and he answered questions from every one of us.

“My uncle sent me the original email to get involved, as I hadn’t heard of the campaign before then. Before I became involved with the ONE campaign, I wanted to get into science as my career but now I want to get into law – so it has changed a lot for me.”

The event was held to launch the Action/2015 campaign bringing together more than 1,000 NGO’s, including the ONE Campaign, from 120 countries together to make the world a better place this year.

Speaking at the event, the Labour leader said that millennium development goals – which are to be replaced by ‘sustainable development goals’ - had shown what could be achieved when an agreement is reached by all parties.

He added: “17,000 fewer children die every day in our world as a result of vaccines and other efforts and 58million more children go to primary school across our world.

“There’s still a long way to go in getting kids to go to primary school but don’t believe those people who tell you that nothing can change, that extreme poverty is always going to be here.”
