An independent bookshop is calling on parents, teachers and the community to choose the winner of a school sponsorship award.

Kew Bookshop launched its achieving through reading scheme last year, with state-funded schools in boroughs including Richmond, Wandsworth, Hounslow and Ealing, up for nomination.

Now the Station Approach shop wants the public to vote for one of the six shortlisted schools to help select the winner, which will receive a year's worth of literacy support between the world book days in 2015 and 2016.

The shortlisted schools are Heathfield Infant School, Nelson Primary School, St Stephen's C of E Primary School, West Hill Primary School, Wandsworth, Beavers Community Primary School, Hounslow, and Victoria Junior School, Hounslow.

Anna Zammit, schools manager at Kew Bookshop, said: "It was very difficult to narrow down the nominations to just six schools, but we feel that the schools we selected are all deserving of the award."

The winning school will receive a free book for every child on world book day, £200 of quality, new books for their library and two free author or illustrator visits.

They will also receive a free assessment of their library with curriculum-based recommendations and a 20 per cent discount on orders from Kew Bookshop.

Isla Dawes, owner of Kew Bookshop, hoped the award would become an annual occurrence. So far, more than 2,000 people have chosen their winning school, with the closing date for votes on Saturday, January 31.
