Firm favourites during the Olympics and Commonwealth Games last year, the flower bikes will be making a comeback for the Rugby World Cup.

A rugby-inspired planter bike art project will see bikes decorated in the colours of the countries competing in the world cup, which will begin on September 18, and placed throughout the borough.

During the event, 20 nations will compete to take the Webb Ellis Trophy home with matches taking place in venues across England.

Elmbridge has been selected as a base for four teams. Wales and Fiji at the Xcel Leisure Complex, Walton, and Italy and Namibia at Cobham Rugby Club.

People will be given free rein to decorate the themed bikes as part of the Planter Bike Art Project. They will simply pick a participating nation and let their imagination run riot.

Councillor Mary Sheldon, portfolio holder for leisure and culture, said: "The flower bikes were a great success in the Olympic year and during the Commonwealth Games last year. We are calling all Elmbridge residents to rise to the challenge of transforming each bike into a piece of art to celebrate the occasion."
