A new principal is taking charge of Greenwich Community College in Plumstead after Ofsted labelled the institution "inadequate".

New chief Lindsey Noble brings with her a wealth of experience after serving as principal of Southampton City College for 12 years.

Ms Noble takes over from former head Gary Chin in a bid to improve standards after scathing remarks made by the inspection team in the recently-published report of their November visit.

The report states: "The principal and governing body have not succeeded in ensuring that all students receive high-quality education and training."

The college, which teaches nearly 3,500 students, also received the lowest marks possible from the school inspection body for quality of teaching and management. Low grades achieved by students were also highlighted as a particular concern.

While noting that standards had slipped since a previous visit in 2013, the Ofsted team added: "Too many lessons are inadequate. In most lessons, teachers fail to meet the differing needs of students."

The new appointment comes as the board of governors are urged by the inspectors to take responsibility for the lack of improvement and move quickly to raise standards.

Interim chair of governors Richard Bourne said: "The college’s recent Ofsted re-inspection had a disappointing result.

"We are so pleased that Lindsey is joining us now, as she has the skills and experience necessary to lead to the College along the path to recovery."

The report will be referred to the Further Education Commissioner, Dr David Collins, who will examine what action needs to be taken to ensure a quick improvement in performance.

On her new role Ms Noble said: "I am very excited about the opportunity of working at Greenwich Community College it will be a challenging role, but one I am familiar with. I intend to work very closely with the FE commissioner and other advisors to bring about the changes identified."
