Children at a Sidcup primary school wound back the clock as they recreated the early days of the Second World War.

Pupils dressed up in 1940s style clothes and acted out scenes such as an evacuation departure from Sidcup Railway station.

The 10 and 11-year-olds, from Holy Trinity Lamorbey C of E Primary School, were taking part in an 'evacuation day'.

The day, part of a creative curriculum project, saw the nippers send letters describing their feelings about leaving home for the first time. They learnt about the lives of the evacuees and the places they were sent to.

They also did some cooking based on Second World War recipes and rationing, and took part in an air raid practice.

Headteacher Robin Aldcroft said: "I felt it was essential for children to experience how it felt for children and adults in the past.

"This is to help them to understand the sacrifices they made so that we can lead the lives we now have."
