A 59-year-old Lithuanian woman who was concerned about returning to her home country died after walking out in front of a Sydenham train, an inquest heard today (January 8).

Nijole Draugelyte was staying with her daughter in Southend Lane and had become "worried for the future" because of her imminent return home, often crying and having mood swings.

Southwark Crown Court heard how she was seen on the tracks at Lower Sydenham station before stepping out in front of a train travelling from Hayes to Charing Cross at around 2.24pm on May 24 last year.

Driver Patrick Robinson said he saw her "wandering" the track before he hit her as the train came towards the station.

He said: "I asked the public to contact the emergency services. I was in such a state I couldn't turn on my phone."

Ms Draugelyte was pronounced dead at the scene and a suicide note was found inside her purse. A post mortem concluded she died from multiple injuries.

Making a conclusion of suicide, coroner Sarah Ormond-Walsh said: "It appears this was a deliberate act of the deceased. There are no suspicious circumstances."
