Following the dramatic closure of two failing care homes in neighbouring Banstead and Sutton last month the Epsom Guardian has taken a look at the state of the borough's care homes.

We reviewed the latest inspection reports published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on all 46 care homes in Epsom and Ewell.

All the inspection reports are available on the CQC website, although there is sometimes a considerable time lag between the inspection and the report being published online. In one case it took nine months for a report on a failing home to be published online due to an administrative error.

Thirty six of them are fully compliant with all CQC standards.

Five were told they required improvement and a further inspection.

They were Ashmount, Copperfield House, Derby House, The Epsom Beaumont and The Shieling in Epsom.

The Epsom Beaumont requires improvement in staffing, while the others were deemed lacking in their “quality and suitability of management”.

Four care homes in the borough have not yet been inspected as they are considered new services that do not require inspection until two years after opening.

Twenty four out of the 46 care homes have not been inspected since 2013.
