Claire Tiltman's killer Colin Ash-Smith is expected to formally apply to appeal against his conviction.

Last month Ash-Smith, 46, was found guilty of stabbing the 16-year-old to death in an alleyway off London Road, Greenhithe, on January 18 1993.

He was sentenced to life in prison - a minimum of 21 years.

The former milkman had denied killing the Dartford Grammar School pupil, but was convicted by a jury at Inner London Crown Court after a five-week trial.

Lawyers acting on Ash-Smith's behalf have now confirmed they will appeal.

They have until Wednesday to lodge legal documents with the Criminal Appeal Office as applications to appeal must be made within 28 days of conviction.

The application will then go before a judge and, if permission is granted, a hearing will be heard at the Court of Appeal in London.
