A SMALL army of carers are selflessly risking their own health looking after sick or elderly family members, says a support charity.

Hillingdon Carers say there are more than 26,000 people in the borough looking after loved ones with little or no support, including a sizeable number of children caring for a parent.

Nicola Jeffries, of Hillingdon Carers, says common issues include isolation, depression and back-related problems.

“We help care for the carers because they are often the forgotten people who are under considerable physical and mental pressure round the clock,” she said.

“I’ve been a carer myself and it is tough work because you don’t a get a break. It’s not like a job you finish at the end of the day.

“These people save the health service a huge amount of money and we offer a range of advice and support including giving them some ‘me’ time.”

Nicola says numbers have grown steadily as their profile has grown and people have become more aware that help is available.

This includes a good working relationship with GPs, who refer people to Hillingdon Carers and Hillingdon Hospital, where Nicola has a monthly information stall.

She also has access to wards, where she liaises with nurses to help identify those who can be helped.
