A father has continued his annual visit to a children’s ward in honour of his son who died 25 years ago despite suffering from advanced-stage cancer.

Frank Charles, 51, of Chester Road in Wanstead, today lifted the spirits of children in Acorn ward at Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone.

Inspired by the nurses in the ward, who looked after his 23-month-old son, Ashley, before he died from Hirschsrung’s disease, his annual appeal collects donations from the public and businesses.

Despite facing his own personal battle with stage four non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Mr Charles said this year’s visit, his eleventh, helped him cope and gave him strength.

He said: "[The cancer] has now reached a stage where it is life-threatening.

"I am very grateful to see this year through. Every day is a blessing.

"It gives me some kind of strength and peace of mind.

"I will continue to do this for as long as I am here."

Mr Charles said this year's appeal led to more gifts than ever before, with continued support from Asda in Leyton and The Salvation Army in Leytonstone, Haslers Chartered Accountants in Loughton, and the Loughton, Buckhurst Hill and Chigwell Rotary Club.

Explaining his ongoing dedication, Mr Charles added: "It is a tribute to my son but also the fantastic work of the nurses.

"There is always a bit of trepidation but to go into hospital and to see the children’s' faces is very humbling and a special moment.

"I am such a great believer in giving back to the community."

Mr Charles hopes to register the Give a Gift Appeal as a charity next year after completing one of his Bucket List wishes, which is to compete in the John O' Groates to Lands End cycle challenge.
