A lollipop lady who has been seeing children safely across the road has left her role after more than 30 years.

Marion Tyrer, 62, is one of the most well known faces at Barclay Primary School in Leyton.

Every morning and every afternoon Mrs Tyrer has worked at the junction of Canterbury Road and Essex Road with a friendly smile.

Before starting in 1983, she volunteered at the school – helping children to read.

Mrs Tyrer, of Hartington Road in Walthamstow, said she has seen changes over the years, including patrols being cut from four per day to two when home lunches were stopped.

She said: “You get out what you put in to this job and I had a fantastic time. I loved every minute of it.

“I saw children across the roads and now I am seeing their children across.

“I’ve dressed up as a bear, I’ve enjoyed children’s parties, I’ve been invited to weddings, I couldn’t choose just one best moment – there are so many.

“There are more dangerous drivers now, definitely, and there is less courtesy on the roads, but I did it because I love it.”

Mrs Tyrer, crowned Lollipop Lady of the Borough in 1986, is leaving to help her son care for her first grandchild.

Her last shift was on Friday.

Mrs Tyrer added: “The baby is due in January and I want to spend as much time with them as I can.

"That’s why I decided to pack up at Christmas. I think my husband is dreading it.

“There were a few tears on Friday.

“I would like to say thank you to all the kids and their parents for making my life so special.”
