Plans to slash carbon emissions in the borough by 40 per cent are ahead of schedule.

Emissions from Haringey Borough Council were down 32.7 per cent on 2006/07 levels to 28,000 tonnes - the equivalent of taking nearly 4,200 cars off the streets.

The council is on track to cut its emissions by 40 per cent on 2006 levels to 24,858 tonnes by April 2015.

Councillor Joe Goldberg, cabinet member for economic development, social inclusion and sustainability, said: “I’m determined that Haringey should be at the forefront of tackling climate change, growing a green economy and being innovative in developing new technology.

“I’m proud of our success in cutting the council’s carbon footprint, but the challenge of reducing emissions across the borough remains which is why we are pressing ahead with these pioneering projects.”

CO2 emissions were also slashed by 11 per cent in the last year.
