Parents of a gravely ill baby girl are appealing for help to give their daughter a chance of survival.

Olivia Stanca was born at Whipps Cross Hospital on February 16 with Neuroblastoma, a rare form of cancer affecting the nervous system.

Within hours she was transferred to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where she received chemotherapy.

The treatment was a success, but bacteria from Olivia’s gut are getting into her bloodstream and she has suffered serious infections.

Doctors on November 26 notified her parents that treatment would cease in 30 days if there was no improvement in her condition.

Parents Maria, 33, and Gheorge are now trying to raise enough money for Olivia to be transferred to a private clinic, or a transfer to another hospital, where her treatment can continue.

Mrs Stanca, from Walthamstow, said: “Everything she has got is treatable.

“She has got no incurable disease, no brain damage or anything painful, but they propose to withdraw treatment from her.

“We are both heartbroken and desperate for her to have a fair chance.

“She is only now making progress from a serious septic episode.

“We know she will fight this, she just needs the chance.

“We are absolutely heartbroken. We feel our baby is slipping away and they do not care.”

The couple have raised £31,000, but say they need £550,000 for three months of intensive treatment at another hospital.

The Stanca’s say specialists in Birmingham providing a second opinion concluded her treatment should continue.

“We are not giving up. It’s horrendous. We want to have our first Christmas with our baby.” Mrs Stanca added.

Great Ormond Street insisted no final decision had been made about Olivia’s treatment, but said if her condition continues to deteriorate, then a decision would be made on whether continued treatment would be in her best interests.

Her condition is now due to be reviewed on December 29.
