A school rated as inadequate and put into special measures is making “reasonable progress” according to the school’s watchdog.

Weald Junior School, in Robin Hood Drive, Harrow Weald, was found to be inadequate in three out of four key markers by Ofsted in June this year.

Since then the watchdog has made a number of follow up inspections to check on the progress of the school’s improvement.

In the latest report from Ofsted, published this week inspector Jeremy Loukes said: “The school is making reasonable progress towards the removal of special measures.”

Earlier in the year the achievement of the school and teaching were found to be inadequate and Ofsted made a number of recommendations.

These included strengthening the leadership in the school, improving the achievement and behaviour of pupils, and improving the quality of teaching.

In the latest report Mr Loukes said: “Work in pupils’ books demonstrates clearly that recent improvements in the quality of teaching have had a positive impact on achievement.

“As a result of the school’s focus on improving writing, standards have risen noticeably.

“Work in pupils’ books shows that standards are also rising in mathematics, although at a slower pace than in writing “Pupils’ work is now considerably neater and well organised as a result of raised expectations of standards of presentation.”

Report also says there is “a greater focus on the impact of teaching on pupils’ progress.”

On the leadership at the school: “There has been a determined focus on increasing the capacity of leadership at different levels.

“The roles of year group leaders and those with responsibility for leading English and mathematics have been clearly defined.”

Since the inspection this summer the school has been working with Harrow Borough Council and the governing body to implement the recommendations from Ofsted.
