A parcel theft was caught on CCTV after the people eagerly awaiting a delivery checked the video to see why they had not received a package they were expecting.

Enzo Pozella, of Severn Drive, Esher, was furious to find a passerby apparently dashing to his front door, where the parcel was left, swiping it and running back to a waiting car.

The delivery driver was said to have signed for the JJB Sports delivery because no one was at home to do so, and left the package on the doorstep.

CCTV footage then snapped two people in a car driving down Severn Drive, stopping outside the property, and a woman approaching the house, grabbing the parcel and making off with it at about 2.30pm on Wednesday, November 26.

A number of other properties in the road were victims of a similar crime, and following the reported theft, police said to there have been numerous reports of parcels being taken like this throughout the area.

Mr Pozella commented on the increase in home deliveries in readiness for Christmas and said: “They are laughing really as they have been getting away with this for ages.”

Hinchley Wood Residents’ Association sent out a warning in an e-bulletin following the spate of parcel thefts.

It said: “We have had a report of parcels left on doorsteps by delivery drivers in Hinchley Wood being stolen. In one case photographic evidence was obtained and has been passed to the police.

“In the run up to Christmas it seems likely that this sort of activity may well continue to increase, so please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police on 101, or 999 if a suspected crime is actually in progress.”

Elaine Burtenshaw, Surrey Police crime reduction adviser, said: “Unattended parcels left outside your property could prove to be very enticing to an opportunist thief. Ordering online or opting for home delivery of goods is a popular way of purchasing presents, especially during the lead up to Christmas.

“To reduce the risk of theft you should always ensure that there is someone at home to receive your order. Alternatively, arrange for delivery to a neighbour or another address where it can be received on your behalf. Don't think that placing the item out of sight behind a plant pot makes it invisible; if a parcel can be left there, a thief can also easily find and take it.

“Many companies offer services where you can collect your goods at a convenient pick-up point – don’t take any chances, don’t give a thief the opportunity to put your lovingly chosen presents under someone else’s tree.”
