A restaurant serving African cuisine could lose its licence after repeatedly employing illegal immigrants.

Lagos Island, in Lea Bridge Road, Leyton, was visited by police and Border Agency officers in May.

People working in the country without permission were found to be employed at the restaurant owned by Oridolamu Gaby Kolago.

In a statement, police licensing officer Donna Willcox said: “During our visit Mr Kalajo was abusive and aggressive towards colleagues from UKBA.

“Checks were carried out on individuals who were clearly working in the kitchen and as a result two females were arrested for illegally working in the United Kingdom.”

A warrant was then applied for by police, who revisited the site on September 5.

Four workers of eight were then arrested, including two Nigerian nationals.

PC Willcox added: “Throughout the process, Mr Kolajo was obstructive and very agitated, refusing to answer any questions about any individual who was pointed out as a staff member.

“He turned the music up in the venue.

On Monday, Waltham Forest council’s licensing committee will consider whether to remove Mr Kolago as the designated premises supervisor, or revoke or suspend licensable activities, including the sale of alcohol and the playing of music.
