A teenage mother who tried to steal a trolley full of shopping from a supermarket has received a conditional discharge.

Symiah Deen, 19, of Grange Park Road, Leyton, pleaded guilty to theft from Morrisons in Salisbury Hall Gardens, Chingford, earlier this month.

Appearing at Thames Magistrates Court yesterday afternoon, Deen was given a conditional discharge for two years.

Prosecuting, Karen Phillips, told the court that on November 6 Deen had pushed a trolley around the store, filling it with £456.29-worth of food and toiletries.

She then left with the trolley, setting off the alarm, and a member of staff followed her to Nelson Road, before she was arrested.

Mitigating, Paul Culbert, said: “She admits the offence and has expressed how it is a stupid mistake. Symiah doesn’t want to do anything like this again.

“She is only 19-years-old and has lived in a flat all on her own for nine months with a nine-month-old child.

“Symiah feels isolated in the community and has been finding it difficult to cope, she has not been receiving any help financially from her family.”

Judge Jane McIvor said she was taking Deen’s situation into account when she sentenced her to a conditional discharge for two years and also ordering her to pay £100 court costs.
