Silence fell across Bromley on Sunday as residents turned out in their thousands to remember fallen soldiers who have lost their lives at war.

MP Colonel Bob Stewart and Councillor Michael Tickner attended a wreath-laying ceremony at Beckenham War Memorial followed by a parade.

Veterans and the 5th Beckenham South Scout Group were among those who turned out in force for the procession.

Bromley Mayor Councillor Julian Benington and Bromley and Chislehurst MP Bob Neill attended a service at Bromley Parish Church.

And Penge residents enjoyed their first Remembrance Day ceremony since the installment of new war memorial plaques in October.

Campaigners teamed up last year to raise money for the plaques, bearing the names of Penge people who lost their lives in the Second World War.

The Orpington War Memorial was bathed in red lights in the week leading up to the Remembrance Sunday service.

Phil Waller, of the Orpington History Organisation, arranged the red floodlighting.

He said: "The Orpington service was one of the best-attended in years but sadly many district veterans have been lost this year that would normally be there attending and marching."

Royal British Legion volunteers also held a collection at Sainsbury’s in Bromley on Saturday morning.

And clients at Saxon Day Care Centre in Orpington also produced a collage representing the Tower of London poppies to commemorate fallen soldiers.

Services in Biggin Hill, Shortlands, West Wickham, Petts Wood and Chislehurst, to name a few, were also well attended.
