Two teenagers were hospitalised following an accident in Sydenham Road involving two cars and a motorbike.

Police were called at around 8.20pm last night, Tuesday November 3, to reports of a crash along Sydenham Road near the junction with Newlands Park Road.

In the aftermath of the crash, around 25 people erupted into a street fight which saw four men arrested for affray and assault on police, among other offences.

Two women, thought to be sisters, were hospitalised and a spokesman for the London Ambulance Service confirmed: "We treated two patients and took them both to King's College Hospital. A 19-year-old had minor head and face injuries, and a 16-year-old had back and neck pain."

It is believed that one of the cars - possibly a black Mercedes - and the motorcycle were parked when the incident occurred.

A 43-year-old who works at newsagent Endora House, which overlooks the crash site, said: "I was working last night, and I heard a loud bang, it sounded like a big explosion. A motorbike which was parked was damaged, and the lamppost.

"Afterwards they were fighting. I don't know how it started but I saw police arresting people."

He added: "It's the third time an accident has happened, it's very dangerous here."

With debris scattered all over the road, hairdesser from a salon also overlooking the scene said: "I just heard a 'boom' and two wheels came off the car and were in the middle of the street."

The 40-year-old man added: "Passers-by put two girls in the kebab shop after they took them out from the car. There was a crowd of about 60 people. Then some people started fighting, they were properly fighting punching and kicking each other."

The Sydenham Road, near the junction, was closed for a period of time following the accident which also damaged traffic lights.

Transport for London have confirmed temporary lights are in operation until the damage is repaired.

Onlooker Michael Snasdell, 41, who grew up in Homecroft Road, arrived at the scene just after 9pm.

He described the carnage, saying: "As I walked onto the High Street from Queensthorpe Road there was a eerie silence, broken only by the sound of a bus reversing down the high street away from the scene (not involved).

"As I walked into the midst of emergency vehicles and police officers all buzzing about, you could feel tension in the air, an almost electric feeling.

"The response to the accident was a huge one, a large number of vehicles and officers, as well as London Ambulance being there in a number of capacities."

Mr Snasdell, a dispatcher, added: "It became obvious that there had been a number of people detained for various reasons, and that a scuffle had occurred, seeing one young man being un-cuffed and escorted past an area with the clear instruction not to try and make contact with someone else there."

The four men remain in custody at a South London police station.

Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident.
