A signed Pablo Picasso print has helped to raise more than £6,000 to preserve a Victorian grade II listed church.

The print, Sala Gaspar, Three Drinkers, was made in 1961 within a run of about 500, and was given to St James' Church, Weybridge, to raise funds in an auction.

It was donated by Globe Gallery in Weybridge and sold for £475 in the auction on Saturday, October 18.

The organiser of the event, and church treasurer for the past nine years, Ali Biggs, 42, said: "There is a constant need to raise money as it costs about £200,000-a-year to run our parish."

She said the auction only happened every three years or so, and was "our flagship event".

The building was designed in the 1840s by architect John Loughborough Pearson to replace the church of St Nicholas.

Speaking of the print, Mrs Biggs, from Addlestone, but born in Weybridge, said: "It was the biggest item that we auctioned off. We went to lots of retailers in Weybridge and asked them if they would donate items and we had a really positive response.

"We were almost overwhelmed with the response."

The live and silent auction raised more than £6,000 to preserve the Victorian building, that is in constant need of maintenance work, and went towards about £25,000 required for work on the outside of the building, that started on Monday, October 20.
