A man has been spared a prison sentence after explaining that he carried a kitchen knife as he feared for his life.

Gregory Bennett of Long Green in Chigwell admitted one count of carrying an offensive weapon at Thames Magistrates Court on Friday.

He was searched by police on September 10 in Church Road, Leyton, when police stopped his friend’s car.

A ten-inch, wooden handled lock knife was discovered in the car.

The 40-year-old told police immediately it belonged to him.

Standing in the dock Bennett told the judges he was almost killed in a random knife attack in 2012 and has since had no help from the Met Police.

“Your honour, I was stabbed and injured very bad for no reason at all, me and my friends. We were in the hospital for weeks. I have still got very short breathing,” he said.

“I testified against one guy at the Old Bailey. Since that happened I have had no support from the police and I have still seen that guy.

“Two days before the incident with the knife I feel so terrified. I am not a knife person; I am not a man who is looking for trouble.

“I’m just so nervous. I know it was a silly thing to do and I will never do it again. I am so sorry.”

When passing sentence Judge C Smalling said: “You are very fortunate to be going home today.

“This is a very serious matter. Because you pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, although it was wrong, and we have heard your mitigation, you will not be going into custody today.”

Mr Bennett, who pleaded guilty was fined a total of £145 and ordered to carry out 40 hours of unpaid work.
