Around 350 homes, a new central library and public space in the heart of Harrow are among proposals for a town centre eyesore - but there are no plans for a 19-storey skyscraper.

Today the Hyde Group showcased its early proposals for the former Royal Mail sorting office site in College Road, Harrow town centre, as part of a consultation process for the site.

The developer bought the site last year and announced last week it is in the early stages of producing a planning application to submit to Harrow Borough Council.

In 2011, plans for a skyscraper on the site were rejected by Harrow Borough Council but the proposal to build a 19-storey structure was accepted by the Secretary of State, subject to "world-class architectural design" being achieved.

The current proposals do not include a 19-storey building but do include up to four housing blocks with a mixture of one to three bedroom flats.

There is also space for a new central library for Harrow, following discussions between the council and the developer.

The public exhibition will continue on at Harrow Baptist Church, in College Road, on Saturday from 10am to 2pm.

After the exhibition, people will still be able to view the plans and have their say by visiting www.51collegeroad.co.uk.

The housing group will hold a second public exhibition with more detailed plans for the site in December and hopes to submit plans to the council in January 2015.
