The Environment Agency are monitoring the Woolwich Dockyard after more than 200 fish had been found dead there.

Officers were called to the dockyard on Friday evening following reports of “fish gasping” but were unable to save them.

A further 30-40 small fish had also died at the scene yesterday.

The Environment Agency have said the sudden cold weather is the likely cause of the incident and are treating the water with hydrogen peroxide in an attempt to prevent any more fish from dying.

An Environment Agency spokeswoman said: “We received a report on Friday night that there were fish in distress at the Woolwich Dockyard. Officers attended first thing Saturday morning and found 200 dead fish and very low oxygen levels.

“This is the result of the recent cold weather which has caused dense, deoxygenated water at the bottom of the dock to rise to the surface. Officers dosed the dock with hydrogen peroxide and will be working with the angling club to install mechanical aeration today.”
