A mum whose daughter has kidney cancer has spoken of their determination to "beat this disease once and for all".

Eva Gilligan, from Worcester Park, was diagnosed with Wilm’s tumour at the age of just 18 months in November last year and underwent seven months of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery.

Her mum Rebecca said: "Just as her treatment was due to end in June, a routine scan showed that the cancer had returned and she was to start a new regime of high dose chemotherapy.

"She will also need more surgery and a stem cell transplant."

Ms Gilligan and her friend Devenia Besant have raised more than £2,800 for charity CLIC Sargent this year while family members have raised another £8,000.

CLIC cares for children with cancer and provides support for families at home and in hospital from the day of diagnosis.

Ms Gilligan and Ms Besant said their next fundraising drive is for Momentum, at Kingston Hospital, which has given the family emotional support and a respite holiday in a forest cabin.

They said: "There is a battle ahead but we are determined to beat this disease once and for all.

"Eva is an inspiration to us every day by remaining happy and extremely cheeky even though she is going through so much."

The women want the gold ribbon for children with cancer to be as recognisable as the pink ribbon for breast cancer and for more posters to be put up to raise awareness in health centres.
